Chile Earthquake Dominates TV News Networks

A deadly 8.8-magnitude earthquake shook Chile early Saturday morning, spawning a tsunami that reportedly poses a threat to Hawaii and much of the Pacific Rim, and the cable news networks are providing extended coverage.

FOX News is calling the earthquake the most powerful to hit Chile in 50 years, and CNN meteorologist Chad Meyers estimates that the quake contained "somewhere between 800 and 900 times the shaking power" of the natural disaster that struck Haiti last month.

More than 120 people in Chile are dead in the earthquake's aftermath, and the number of fatalities is "quickly rising," says the Associated Press. The quake turned roads to rubble and left many areas cut off from electricity, water and phone contact, says CBS News.
